It is true that other species communicate, but we humans have used speech and language as a cornerstone of our organization and success as species, it is through language that knowledge is stored and our consciousness is often manifested in spoken inner words, in short speech and language are a big deal and today we will look at them from a systems point of view, a system that is already well on it’s way to being recreated in AI but also has some fundamental issues we haven’t quite figured out ( or maybe tried ).

According to Donella Meadows ( of systems thinking fame ) if you want to start figuring out a system no matter how complex you should pay attention to what it produces, taking the stance of an alien that just met us we produce sounds that once received by another human convey or carry certain meaning, so a first pass at the speech/language system would look like this:

Accordingly there are 2 main subsystems dealing with speech production and speech reception ( together called the dual stream model ) which in turn are made of various subsystems and additional inputs and outputs to and from mayor systems like memory and attention, a very complex system even when summarizing so let’s try a divide and conquer approach before joining them as they acquire/explain new abilities when combined….

⚠️ Sound is a fascinating an complex thing that just exists in the universe we live in, so the story of speech in many ways starts with understanding sound and the early reception of sound waves, I covered these topics in some detail in a couple of previous related posts you might want to consult but is explained in the following illustration in case you don't.- Hearing for robots and AI
